3 TRIPS LECTURES NEUE GALERIE AND COOPER HEWITT NEW! This full and fascinating day will begin with a guided tour (before the public opening time) of the Neue Galerie, home of Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) by Gustav Klimt, which was the subject of the recent major motion picture Woman in Gold. Please see information below about a showing of the film in advance of the trip. Our tour will also include the current exhibition, Munch and Expressionism, which will offer a compelling new look at works by Edvard Munch, the Norwegian artist whose painting The Scream has become a symbol of modern angst. The Neue Galerie is the sole venue for this exhibition, which is not to be missed. Next well enjoy a delicious lunch at Sarabeths, a popular local restaurant, followed by a guided tour of Cooper Hewitt, the only museum in the nation devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. You'll have time to explore its other attractions on your own. Thursday, May 5 9 am 5 pm Bus leaves from the Bronxville Womens Club, 135 Midland Ave. $138 Woman In Gold This historical drama is based upon the incredible true story of how Adele Bloch-Bauer's niece success- fully sued the Austrian Government for the return of five Klimt paintings seized by the Nazis in Vienna during World War II. Whether or not you will be joining the trip, dont miss this remarkable film, open to all free of charge, courtesy of the Bronxville Public Library. No fee or registration required. Thursday, April 14 1:30 pm Bronxville Public Library, 201 Pondfield Rd. DISCOVERING STREET ART: The Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn NEW! Graffiti has evolved from simple tagging to the glorification of entire neighborhoods with murals that cover entire blocks of buildings. Explore the incredible realm of modern street art in a six-block area of the Bushwick neighborhood in Brooklyn. Artists from all over the world have painted an astounding variety of imagery that must be seen to be believed. Bustling with industry during the week, this neighborhood becomes a mecca for artists and art lovers every weekend. The first meeting will be a two-hour classroom lecture about the street art movement, its origins and aesthetic and political agendas, with an introduction to major figures and collaborations. It will be followed by a two-hour guided walking tour of the Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn on the weekend. There are coffee shops and restaurants in the area, and on the weekends the streets of the Bushwick Collective become an outdoor museum for those who love to browse some of the coolest artwork on earth. Transportation for the field trip is the personal responsibility of the student, although carpools may be arranged during the first meeting. Artists have created images depicting the Easter story since the advent of early Christianity. Western culture required religious images of the Passion, and artists had to find a balance between tradition and their creative vision. This class explores the short, final period in the life of Jesus, covering his visit to Jerusalem, his execution by crucifixion and his resurrection - events central to Christian beliefs. We will examine the expressive imagery these artists created for this paramount New Testament narrative, while developing an appreciation for the artists historical context. The artwork explored ranges from the Renaissance period throughout Europe up to the present, using many examples from New York museums. 2 Mondays: March 7, 14 7 9 pm Bronxville School $50 Martin Merchant is a retired Hastings-on-Hudson school district art department chair and a former professional photographer. For the last ten years, he has presented workshops about many aspects of photography, digital media, and art history from urban street art to religious iconography. 4 BEHIND THE BALLET NEW! This two-part informative and entertaining series will facilitate the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of ballet. Suggested performances for each class are provided for those who wish to arrange to attend on their own (Bronxville Adult School will not be organizing a group trip). THE HISTORY OF BALLET FROM THE RENAISSANCE THROUGH THE 20TH CENTURY NEW! Through a visual slide presentation, this class will provide an overview of the development of ballet from early ballet de cour (court ballet) to the contemporary ballet of today. The relationship of related arts music, painting, literature and their influence on ballet will be discussed. Prominent periods will include Romantic Ballet of the mid-1800's, Classical Ballet in Russia at the turn of the century, Ballet Russes of the 1920's, and the development of American and British Ballet in the latter 20th Century. Suggested performance: Sunday, April 10, Don Quixote from the Bolshoi Ballet, Moscow, at local movie theaters. Monday, April 4 7 9 pm Bronxville School $30 BALLET INTO THE 21st CENTURY NEW! This class will trace prominent choreographers and dancers from the 20th Century. Balanchine, Robbins, Tudor, de Mille, Ashton, Macmillan and others will be discussed as their choreographic legacy is inherited by the 21st Century generation. Their muses - dancers on both sides of the Atlantic - as well as the renowned Russian defectors of the 70's will be incorporated into the discussion. Video footage of works will be shown to draw an appreciation of the choreographers and dancers of the period and their unique contributions to the development of ballet today. Suggested performance: 21st-Century Choreographers, New York City Ballet; dates in April and May. Monday, April 25 7 9 pm Bronxville School $30 Register for both classes and save $10 $50 Helen Coope was trained from an early age at a professional theatre school in England before attending the Royal Ballet School in London. She danced with Hong Kong Ballet for All prior to coming to America. In the States, she worked for Cleveland Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Feld Ballet NYC before becoming Ballet Mistress for Connecticut Ballet in Stamford, CT. She recently retired after 25 years with the company. Additionally she has choreographed the musicals at the Bronxville School over the last fifteen years. CUBAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN THE COLONIAL ERA NEW! Cuba retains a rich architectural heritage from its Arawak and colonial periods, in indigenous institutions and traditions that survived the conquistadores, in the beautifully preserved urban fabric of old Havana, and in the provincial towns like Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Santiago. We will explore Cubas tumultuous history through these monuments, considering the political and economic changes that marked a rich and changing history. Dean of Sarah Lawrence College, Jerrilynn Dodds is a lecturer at The Metropolitan Museum, has been Distinguished Professor of Art History at CUNY, and has taught at Harvard, Columbia and MIT. An author and prize-winning documentary filmmaker, she has curated numerous exhibitions. Tuesday, April 5 7 8 pm Bronxville Public Library $25 MUSIC APPRECIATION FILM THE OPERA EXPERIENCE: Understanding The Mets Live in HD Opera Series NEW! The Metropolitan Operas Emmy Award-winning series, The Met: Live in HD, continues its performances at your local movie theater. Join us in advance of each screening for a lively discussion of each operas history, highlights, libretto, and cultural and social significance. 5 THE BIRTH OF THE BLUES NEW! In this seminar we will view and analyze the origins of the Blues, the uniqueness of this great American art form and how it is related to Jazz, but takes a completely different path. A brief account of how it all came to be and developed will be discussed as well as listening to examples of these early developments, from African drumming pieces to field hollers, work songs, spirituals and finally early Delta Blues. We will listen to and analyze the musical elements that make Blues music different from any music that came before it, how it defies conventional music theory and how it has given birth to nearly every style of music that we currently listen to and enjoy here in the US and abroad that is not classical, be it Rock-n-Roll, Soul, Funk, Pop, Jazz, Country and more. Glenn Alexander, a widely recognized guitarist, composer and producer, is Head of Jazz Studies at Sarah Lawrence College and served on the faculty at the New School for 18 years. 2 Thursdays: April 7, 14 7 9 pm Bronxville School $50 HOW ITALY INSPIRED THE GREATEST COMPOSERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD NEW! Internationally-acclaimed Italian pianist and composer Cristiana Pegoraro will take the audience inside her homeland in an entertaining format that combines live piano performances with a fascinating review of how Italy inspired the music of the greatest composers, from Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt, to the opera composers of the 1800s and the Argentine tango. Called an artist of the highest caliber by The New York Times, Cristiana Pegoraro has performed as a soloist and with orchestras at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and other international venues. Wednesday, April 13 7 9 pm Bronxville School $30 REEL IQ: THE NEXT GENERATION OF FILMMAKERS Indie directors have gone mainstream! The Coen Brothers and Quentin Tarantino are Oscar-winners. So is Alejandro Irritu for Birdman (and a Golden Globe for The Revenant as of January). All three have challenged viewers to experience cinema in a new, provocative way. With their quirky humor, distinctive art direction and offbeat themes, these auteurs, as well as Wes Anderson and Rian Johnson (slated to direct Star Wars: Episode VIII), are shaping movies for the 21st century. Students will watch an assigned film in advance of each class, which will be used as a springboard for in-depth examination of the director's oeuvre, evolving style and cinematic influences. Debra Griboff regularly lectures on film history in Westchester County and NYC, with the goal of stimulating conversation and critical thinking. 5 Tuesdays: April 12 May 10 6:45 8:45 pm Bronxville School $125 BYE, BYE MISS AMERICAN PIE: Rock & Roll in the 1950s and 60s NEW! Throughout the 1950s and 60s, the American cultural landscape was dramatically transformed, from the optimism and conformity of the 1950s to the cultural metamorphosis brought on by the political and social changes of the 1960s. There was a musical transformation as well during these decades. In that context, this class will deconstruct the lyrics of Don McLeans 1971-72 number one hit song, American Pie, as a reflection of the musical evolution of Rock & Roll from the tunes of the 1950s to 1970. 2 Mondays: May 2, 9 7 9 pm Bronxville School $50 THE MUSIC OF LENNON AND McCARTNEY NEW! Examine the genius of the songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Well follow the songs from their early years over time as their songs and music grew in complexity. Stories about and quotes from the Beatles themselves will provide insight into how or why each song was written. She has been an art teacher for more than thirty-five years, twenty- five of them with the Eastchester School District. DRAWING BASICS Like to draw? Dream of taking your stick figures to the next level? Heres where to start! Well cover the basics of design, contour, shading and compositionwith in-depth demos to help you draw various types of objectsand have fun while bringing out the artist in you! A new technique will be taught each week and then incorporated into an afghan patch. At the end of the semester the patches will be stitched into a blanket. Learn the basics: chaining, single and double crochet, increases, decreases, read- ing patterns, changing colors and weaving in your ends. This class will prepare beginners for the granny squares crochet class below. Bring light-colored worsted weight yarn and a size J hook. 3 Wednesdays: March 30, April 6, 13 9:30 11 am $60 Reformed Church, Room 400, 180 Pondfield Rd., Bronxville CROCHET: Granny Squares and Beyond NEW! This class is for advanced beginners and requires a basic knowledge of stitches. Granny squares can be used for many cute accessories as well as a traditional blanket. Each week a new granny square pattern will be introduced, as well as ideas for finishing. 7 OILS and ACRYLICS This class teaches the basic skills needed to produce a successful painting, and helps you develop your own artistic style. Beginners learn the painting process with simple step-by-step exercises. Experienced painters develop their existing skills and explore more involved challenges. Students receive individual critiques and benefit from principles followed by the masters for hundreds of years. Supply list on website. Joseph Fama, an award-winning artist, captures inspiration from nature and history. His Western Collection has been widely exhibited. He has been an art director, a designer for Christopher Radko and an adjunct professor at Westchester Community College. 10 Thursdays: March 17 May 26 (no class 3/24) 7 9 pm Bronxville School $200 WATERCOLOR: EXPERIMENTING WITH MULTIMEDIA NEW! Use watercolor in a variety of multimedia applications. In this course you will create artwork using traditional and contemporary watercolor approaches, as well as get experience going beyond the norm, using watercolor to create monotypes and collages. Pamela Tucker is the Director of Art Education at the New Dawn Foundation in New Rochelle, Vice President of the Reilly League of Artists in White Plains, and a practicing artist who exhibits her work throughout the Hudson Valley. 8 Tuesdays: March 29 May 17 7 9 pm Bronxville School $160 CALLIGRAPHY for SPECIAL OCCASIONS Copperplate is a beautiful, elegant 18th-century script style of calligraphy using a dip pointed pen and ink that is wonderful for quotes and invitations, as well as creating ornamental decorations. Students will learn easy and quick ways to create envelope guidelines to make addressing envelopes and writing out place cards a snap! Intermediate students are also welcome and will work with the instructor in the area of their choice. Supply list on website or may be purchased from instructor. Anne M. Tascio got in trouble in first grade for adding curlicues to her printed letters. Undaunted, she has been a professional calligrapher since 1994, teaching the art to adults and children as young as five and creating pieces for clients, countless bridal couples and for direct sale. 8 Thursdays: March 31 May 19 7 9 pm Bronxville School $180 A TISKET, A TASKET: LEARN TO MAKE A BASKET NEW! Learn the basic skills of basketry: how to create and weave a basket, weave the sides, and finish a basket using natural and dyed basket reed to make an attractive basket with a handle. Robin Ingram has been weaving baskets as a hobby since 1997 and is active in the Westchester Basketmakers Guild. 2 Mondays: April 4, 11 7 9 pm Bronxville School $60 EMBROIDERY: NEEDLE ART NEW! Embroidery originated from the need to mend and patch ones clothes. It quickly evolved into a variety of sewing techniques and decorative stitches. Fast-forward to present day, look around and you will readily see how many garments, fabrics and household items make use of embroidery. In this course, well learn a number of traditional embroidery stitches, but use them in an edgier, innovative way to create an all-over surface pattern, a beautiful placement piece or an exquisitely-stitched oversize button. Time permitting, we'll cover cord-making, tassels and other small decorative finishes. Supply list on website. Tina Doyle is an innovative, experienced couturier and instructor, specializing in draping, fitting, sewing and pattern-making. With a particular interest in structured textiles, her work has been displayed at exhibitions in London, Chicago, Colorado and Manchester (UK). He has held management positions at Barnes & Noble, NBC Universal and Nielsen Media, where he designed and implemented innovative web sites, unique marketing programs, and new technologies. To cancel a registration, contact the office at least 5 FULL BUSINESS DAYS prior to the class start date. You will receive a full refund, less a $10 processing fee. No credit will be given for missed classes or if you are unable to attend a rescheduled make-up class. There are no refunds or credits once a course begins. Refunds for trips will only be issued if you withdraw more than 3 WEEKS prior to the trip date. You will receive a full refund, less a $20 processing fee. For cancelations after the deadlines, if your space can be filled you will receive a refund, less a 25% processing fee.
